I had an opportunity today to visit Hospital Serian. Serian is one of districts in Bahagian Samarahan, 64 km from Kuching (quite a distance) with a total population of 102,000. It took me about an hour to reach Serian from Kuching. It is good to know that Serian has 1 hospital, 8 health clinics (Klinik Kesihatan), 1 mother and child clinic, 1 1Malaysia Clinic, 1 community clinics (Klinik Desa) and 4 private clinics. Hospital Serian is a non specialist hospital with 84 beds providing services like emergency, outpatient and inpatient care, general surgery, haemodialysis, blood bank and physiotherapy. On top of that, specialised services are also provided through visiting specialist from Hospital Umum Sarawak, University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and private specialist. The hospital saw between 5,400 and 6,900 ward admissions per year during the past 10 years with bed occupancy rate ranging between 45% and 60%. In 2013, this hospital saw more than 130,000 outpatient attendance. Its interesting to note that the hospital has a very good landscaping and I commend them for a very clean surrounding, providing an ideal working environment despite being a district hospital. I hope Hospital Serian will continue to develop and provide the best for the people of Serian.
