PRESS STATEMENT ON THE THEFT OF MEDICINES FROM HKL PHARMACY STORES

In reference to a news report dated 10th November 2014 on the theft of medicines in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, the Ministry of Health would like to make the following clarifications:

i. The incident involving the theft of medicines from the Neuroscience and Urology-Nephrology Pharmacy Stores in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) occurred between Sunday, 25th December and Monday, 26th December 2011. The loss was detected on Tuesday, 27th December 2011 and a police report was lodged on the same day.

ii. All investigations and necessary actions to apprehend the perpetrators are led by the police. Based on early investigation findings, the police have successfully recovered part of the missing medicines. These medicines have been returned to HKL.

iii. On the Ministry’s part, an internal audit was immediately conducted and remedial actions have been implemented based on the findings. Security improvements have been established since then which include the installation of CCTVs in all the pharmacy main and sub-stores located within HKL in 2013, with further enhancements of the security system done in 2014.

iiii. In addition, security guards have been stationed at all the main stores, where stringent measures have been initiated to control access both during and after office hours.

v. Since the incident in 2011, there have been no further losses from any of the pharmacy stores in HKL.
