Press Statement DG of Health: MRI And Professional Medical Opinion Provided for DSAI

The Ministry of Health (MOH) wishes to refer to three articles dated 28th September 2015 by MalaysiaKini titled ‘Over a dozen medical experts, yet no MRI for Anwar’; The Malaysian Insider titled ‘Anwar needs urgent surgery, his lawyers tell Putrajaya’; and Free Malaysia Today titled ‘Remove chief doc treating Anwar, say lawyers’. Our two previous press statements titled ‘Medical Professionals Are Providing Treatment for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’ on 26th September 2015; and ‘Medical Treatment for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’ released on 22nd September 2015 are also referred to.

As revealed to the media previously by his family, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (DSAI) has a chronic right shoulder injury that now requires medical attention. This injury was sustained 2 years ago prior to his current imprisonment. He also has been diagnosed with various other chronic medical conditions as cited by his family to the press.

The Panel of Experts treating DSAI consists of 17 clinical consultants from eight medical disciplines, including seven Consultants in Orthopaedic Surgery (three are from Hospital Kuala Lumpur, HKL and four are external experts from outside HKL) and two HKL Consultants in Radiology (subspecialising in Muscular Skeletal Radiology).

With regards to seeking a second opinion on his chronic shoulder injury, this has been provided through the participation of the four external Orthopaedic Consultants in the Panel of Experts, of which two are Consultant Orthopaedic Arthroscopy and Sports Surgeons from the private healthcare sector.

In addition, a Consultant Orthopaedic Arthroscopy and Sports Surgeon from UMMC has been allowed by the prison authority to examine DSAI this morning as requested by the family to give another second opinion. A family conference was also subsequently held today involving the patient, family members, the Consultant Orthopaedic Arthroscopy and Sports Surgeon from UMMC, Consultant Orthopaedic Arthroscopy and Sports Surgeon from HKL and the Deputy Director of HKL.

On the statement in the MalaysiaKini article that no recent MRI has been done, we would like to highlight that two MRIs were done on 2nd June 2015 and 24th August 2015. The MRI reports have been prepared by the HKL Consultant Radiologists. Copies of these reports and CDs of the images have been handed over to DSAI’s family with the former on 14th July 2015 and the latter on 21st September 2015.

All decisions regarding DSAI’s treatment are made based on the recomendations of the panel of consultants and no one member of the panel makes decisions on his or her own. All medical reports are prepared by the respective clinical consultants involved in the Panel of Experts. These reports pertaining to his orthopaedic and various chronic medical conditions have also been handed over to the family on 14th July 2015 and 21st September 2015.

The Ministry would like to convey our deepest appreciation of the professionalism shown by the doctors from the public and private healthcare sectors involved in the management of this case. The Director General of Health and the Ministry will stand by the collective decisions made by the Panel of Experts and their professional clinical advice on the appropriate medical attention for the patient.

Thank you.
